Walk on the Wild Side Sponsors
WOWS Sponsors: Paul Mitchell, Malibu Times, Time Warner Cable, Trader Joe’s, Multeepurpose, Beynon Creative
California Wildlife Center’s inaugural 5K Walk on Sunday, May 3. 2009, at Zuma Beach in Malibu, was attended by more than 250 friends of wildlife. As guests gathered to check-in and receive their t-shirts (printed by Multeepurpose), they were entertained by wild DJ Ken Lyle (Music Entertainment Services) and “encouraged” to participate in a warm-up led by fitness trainer and CWC Marine Mammal coordinator Jeff Hall.
Snacks and refreshments were provided by Trader Joe’s, while booths by Marine Mammal Care Center and International Bird Rescue Research Center in San Pedro offered helpful wildlife education handouts.
CWC Executive Director Victoria Harris took the stage, joined by actress and dedicated animal activist Pamela Anderson who CWC recognized for her support with a framed story and photos of a rescued harbor seal pup they dubbed “Pamela,” presented by CWC Assistant Marine Mammal Coordinator, Jonsie Ross.
The funds raised through Walk on the Wild Side will be used to fund paramedic rescue, rehabilitation and release efforts for more than 2,000 animals cared for by the Center each year as a free service to the community as well as wildlife education activities.
Pre-walk activities culminated with the release of a rehabilitated pelican on the beach, which officially kicked off the start of the 5K Walk.

Geraldine Gilliland is a true friend of CWC and fundraiser champion. She hosted a CWC annual fundraiser at her Rancho Chiquita, she catered several from her renowned Lula Cocina Mexicana restaurant in Santa Monica, and she was co-chair of our 2008 "Way Wild" event at Gull's Way. Her other endeavors include Finn McCool's Irish pub in Santa Monica, and the Grill on the Hill cooking classes. She continues to support CWC in many different ways, and we are grateful for her support.
Brian Kest's Power Yoga
Bryan Kest is not only a fan of California Wildlife Center, he's also a partner. "I heard about the great things they were doing at CWC, checked out their website and sent in a big donation," says Kest, who later paid a visit to the Center where he met co-founder Aaron Frank who is a former student at Brian Kest's Power Yoga studio in Santa Monica.
I love what the Center does — the people who work there are my heroes — helping animals who don't have a voice. Even though my business is a start-up, I decided to donate 1-2% of my profits to CWC each month. The more my business grows, the more I can help the work going on up at the Center
, says Kest.

John Paul Mitchell Systems®
It all began in 1980, when John Paul DeJoria and Paul Mitchell first decided to launch their professional hair care system. Initially, resources were so limited that the Paul Mitchell® brand’s now-famous black and white packaging was a result of not being able to afford color ink. Today, John Paul Mitchell Systems® has annual salon retail sales approaching $900 million. The company currently produces over 90 products.
John Paul steers the company according to its original vision. Despite hugely lucrative offers from public corporations to purchase John Paul Mitchell Systems, John Paul refuses to sell the company because of the initial vow he took to stand by the professional beauty industry. Since no public corporation can guarantee it will market John Paul Mitchell Products exclusively through salons, for John Paul - selling is simply not an option.
Trader Joe's, West Los Angeles
Trader Joe's in West Los Angeles donates their not-so-fresh produce to our wild animal patients. What we see coming in might pass for fresh at other stores, so we know the produce they sell must be really fresh! They have many locations, but our source is the one at 3456 South Sepulveda Blvd in West Los Angeles. For more info see their website. Thanks Joe!

In 2004 alone, Albertsons provided nearly $82 million in cash and in-kind donations with support focused on hunger relief, education and the development of youth, and health and nutrition. Thanks Joe!
