Pelicans In Peril - Large numbers of Brown Pelicans have been rescued by numerous organizations along the California and Oregon coast in recent weeks. These shivering and lethargic animals have been discovered to have little or no body fat, and in most cases, are also experiencing water-proofing problems with their feathers. So what is the cause? Scientists from Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Geological Survey, Sea World and International Bird Rescue have been able to identify several factors typical of the El Nino weather pattern we are experiencing as a possible culprit. Warm ocean surface temperatures experienced during an El Nino event cause coastal fish stocks to seek deeper and colder water making them all but inaccessible to the shallow diving pelican. Further, recent rains and associated storm run-off pollution may be the cause of the temporary damage to their important water-proofing. Their research has also been able to reveal that these wayward pelicans do not appear to be the victims of an infectious disease or marine toxin such as Domoic Acid. Since the beginning of 2010, California Wildlife Center has rescued 58 pelicans with more arriving daily. How can you help? Adopt-a-Pelican today! Your donation will provide a cold and starving pelican with rehydration fluids, fish, and much needed medical care. The pelicans thank you (as do we)!

Audubon California WatchList 2007

Audubon's 2007 WatchList identifies bird species throughout the nation that need our help. The list is particularly compelling for conservationists in California, as about a third of the birds on the national list are native to California.
